Cette exposition rassemble pour la première fois un corpus de photographies et de films de Carlos Ferrand Zavala produits il y a près de cinquante ans. Né en 1946 à Lima, au Pérou, Ferrand a immigré au Québec à trente-trois ans, où il a poursuivi une carrière en cinéma. Les œuvres présentées dans l’exposition furent produites au Pérou au début des années 1970, lors de la courte période où Ferrand a travaillé comme cinéaste pour le gouvernement socialiste militaire du général Juan Velasco Alvarado. Si certaines ont été réalisées dans le but de faire la promotion de la réforme agraire du gouvernement, d’autres étaient des projets personnels nés du désir de documenter et de reconnaître le vécu quotidien des personnes noires et autochtones du Pérou. Dans leur ensemble, ces photographies et ces films émettent une critique vis-à-vis du racisme systémique et des inégalités sociales du pays natal de Ferrand, à un moment où la promesse de justice sociale faisait partie intégrante des discours politiques, au Pérou comme ailleurs.

This exhibition brings together for the first time photographs and films created by Carlos Ferrand some fifty years ago. Ferrand was born in 1946 in Lima, Peru, and at the age of thirty-three he immigrated to Quebec, where he has spent the past forty years building a career as a filmmaker. The works presented in this exhibition were all made in Peru in the early 1970s, during the brief period when Ferrand worked as a cinematographer for the socialist military government of General Juan Velasco Alvarado. While some were made to promote the government’s agrarian reform, others were personal projects created out of a desire to record and recognize the everyday realities of Black and Indigenous people in Peru. Taken together, these photographs and films represent the young filmmaker’s initial, critical response to the deeply entrenched racism and social inequities of his country of birth, at a time when the promise of social justice was being appealed to, in Peru and elsewhere, as an engine of political discourse.
