Claude Tousignant est un peintre abstrait du Québec qui maintient une pratique d’atelier régulière depuis les soixante dernières années. Maintenant âgé de quatre-vingt-dix ans, son rythme de travail a commencé à ralentir. Au printemps 2021, sa fille Zoë a apporté une caméra dans l’espace privé de l’atelier pour documenter la réalisation d’un tableau – apparemment son dernier. Il en ressort le portrait sensible d’un artiste introverti qui a toujours préféré sa propre compagnie à celle des autres. Comme les œuvres de Tousignant, le film fait appel aux sens par des couleurs vibrantes et un silence puissant.
Claude Tousignant is an abstract painter from Quebec who has maintained a regular studio practice for the past sixty years. Now ninety, his work pace has begun to slow down. In the spring of 2021, his daughter Zoë brought a camera into the private space of the studio to document the process of making a painting – apparently his last. What emerges is a sensitive portrait of an introverted artist who has always preferred his own company to anyone else’s. Like Tousignant’s works, the film appeals to the senses through vibrant colours and a powerful silence.
