Natifs de St-Mathias-sur-Richelieu, David, Vincent et Étienne Lafrance sont tous devenus artistes en arts visuels. Si notre mémoire est bonne est la première exposition à réunir leurs pratiques, autonomes mais complémentaires. Une œuvre de collaboration, l’exposition comprend une nature morte plus grande que nature composée d’une abondance d’objets fabriqués à la main – mobilier, bibelots, nourriture – qui récrée l’atmosphère festive d’une salle à manger familiale. L’exposition offre l’occasion de voir comment les pratiques distinctes d’une fratrie se rejoignent et s’entrecroisent, et, de façon plus générale, propose une réflexion sur l’impact de l’art dans le développement du mythe identitaire d’une famille. La présence du père, André, celui qui leur a donné la passion des choses faites à la main, apporte un témoignage aidant à déceler les sources d’une telle activité artistique.

Born in St-Mathias-sur-Richelieu, David, Vincent and Étienne Lafrance all became visual artists. Si notre mémoire est bonne is the first exhibition to bring together their autonomous yet complementary practices. The result of a collaborative process, the exhibition includes a large-scale still life installation composed of an abundance of handmade objects – furniture, knick-knacks, food – that recreates the festive atmosphere of a family dining room. The exhibition offers an opportunity to see how the distinct practices of the Lafrance brothers meet and intersect, and, more generally, invites reflection on the impact that art can have on shaping a family's identity myth. The participation of their father, André, who gave them a passion for handcrafting objects, provides a perspective that helps identify the roots of such artistic activity.
