Archipel est une exposition rétrospective qui révèle l’engagement persistant de Serge Clément à l’égard du livre photographique. Les 21 œuvres présentées furent sélectionnées à partir d’un corpus de plus de 46 maquettes, livres d’artiste et publications à grand tirage que Clément a produits depuis 1979. À l’exposition s’ajoute un nouveau livre – également intitulé Archipel – qui nous fait voir la direction qu’ont prise les expérimentations de Clément au cours des 18 dernières années. Ce livre s’avère en soi un énoncé artistique qui nous fait mieux comprendre une voix singulière tout en nous faisant revisiter d’une manière audacieuse une production passée. Une projection vidéo accompagnant l’exposition met en lumière, à travers l’objectif d’un autre médium, la matérialité particulière des livres de Clément.

Archipel is a retrospective exhibition that lays bare Serge Clément’s longstanding engagement with the book form. The twenty-one works presented were selected from a corpus of more than forty-six maquettes, artist’s books and larger print-run publications produced since 1979. The exhibition is accompanied by a new book – also titled Archipel – that proposes a cohesive overview of the direction Clément’s experimentations have taken over the last eighteen years. It is itself an artistic statement that provides insight into a distinctive creative voice while boldly revisiting past production. Also accompanying the exhibition is a video projection that seeks to highlight, through the lens of another medium, the particular materiality of Clément’s book works.
